The Temple of San Biagio, built on the site of an early Christian church dedicated to Santa Maria, is located on a plateau at the foot of the Montepulciano hill on the west side, it was built by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder between 1518 and 1545 . the Temple is considered a great architectural masterpiece of the sixteenth century Tuscan.
The origin of the church is linked to a miraculous event took place April 23, 1518, when two women and a shepherd, passing in front of a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child in her lap, and San Francisco, they saw that the eyes of the Virgin moved.
The temple has a Greek cross plan with a central dome, semicircular apse and flanked by two towers, one of them unfinished. The Baroque interior is painted, it has increased from 1584 altar reredos with marble and adorned by four statues of saints, the work of Ottaviano Lazzerini. Above the altar there is a beautiful stained glass window with Madonna and Saints, by Michelangelo da Cortona.
In front of the church stands the harmonious building of the Rectory, with two beautiful loggias, also designed by Sangallo, but built after his death in 1595. In the middle of the lawn, between the church and the Rectory, there is a pit anch ' it designed by Sangallo.
